“Harnessing the Power of DBpedia: Transforming Data into Knowledge”

In the rapidly evolving digital landscape, the ability to efficiently access, understand, and manipulate data is paramount. DBpedia stands at the forefront of this revolution, offering an unparalleled repository of structured knowledge extracted from Wikipedia, making it an indispensable resource for industry practitioners and technology innovators alike. This workshop is designed to introduce you to the vast capabilities of DBpedia and its suite of technologies that are reshaping how we interact with the world’s knowledge.

DBpedia offers a structured knowledge base derived from Wikipedia – the DBpedia knowledge graph – serving as a critical resource for industries seeking to enhance data analysis, integration, and application development. Over the last 15 years, DBpedia has grown into a huge ecosystem of data and tools that are now accessible via the powerful DBpedia Databus. During the workshop the participants will learn how to navigate and manipulate the DBpedia ecosystem to not only access a global knowledge base but also to enrich their own datasets and applications with semantics and links.

The session aims to equip practitioners with the skills to effectively use DBpedia for enriching their data infrastructure, enabling advanced data interlinking and semantic web applications. Through hands-on examples and industry-focused scenarios, attendees will explore how to extract, manipulate, and leverage linked data from DBpedia to address specific business and research needs. This workshop provides a practical introduction to DBpedia, focusing on its core technologies including RDF data modeling and ontologies, SPARQL querying, entity recognition with DBpedia Spotlight, and RDF conversion techniques. Level: beginner to intermediate.

Using the DBpedia Databus, we will cover:

  1. Host your own data on the Databus (.txt, .csv, .json, .rdf, .nt)*.
  2. Transform and link your data to RDF.
  3. Build a joint Knowledge Graph combining your data plus DBpedia (plus other Linked Data sets).
  4. Deploy an application on top (Ontology-based search, Triple Store, Graph explorer, etc.).

* Bringing your own data is optional. Data can also be supplied by us.

Requirements:

  • Laptop
  • Docker needs to be installed and running on the laptop.
  • Basic knowledge in a programming or scripting language (e.g. Python, Java, Scala, Bash).
  • Main language is English (but individual help can be provided in German).

We are proud to announce that we will organize a tutorial 2.0 at the Knowledge Graph Conference 2022 on May 2, 2022 at 3pm CEST. The tutorial targets existing and potential new users of DBpedia, developers that wish to learn how to replicate DBpedia infrastructure, service providers interested in exploiting the DBpedia KG, data providers interested in integrating data assets with the DBpedia KG, data scientists (e.g. linguists) focused on extracting relevant information (e.g. linguistic) from/based on the DBpedia KG.

The survey of our last tutorial at KGC’21 revealed that the audience was particularly interested in using DBpedia in industry use cases, demos as well as tools. As a consequence we decided to organize a new tutorial that is less focused on research driven topics and instead added more use-cases and practical examples which are demonstrated in hands-on live demo sessions. Additionally we show how to deploy the technology stack and services to be used on private / local infrastructure.

The aim of this tutorial is, from a practical perspective, to explain in detail the DBpedia technology stack and its deployment on a customer infrastructure. The tutorial will also explain in detail the generation and release process of the DBpedia KG. In a real-world use case we will illustrate the use of the DBpedia KG and DBpedia technology stack in combination with proprietary data. Hands-on sessions will be organized to intternalize the DBpedia technology stack with practice.

During the course of the tutorial the following topics will be studied:

  • DBpedia Knowledge Graph in the nutshell
  • DBpedia Technology Stack
  • Deployment of the DBpedia on corporate infrastructure
  • Real-world use case an application of the DBpedia tech

Altough the tutorial will be shaped in a way that no specific prerequisites will be required, the participants would benefit if they have some background knowledge in Semantic Web concepts and technologies (RDF, OWL, SPARQL), general overview of the Web Architecture (HTTP, URI, JSON, etc.) and basic programming skills (bash, Java, JavaScript). All required software and tools will be provided and they will be freely available for the participants. Instructions for the hands-on-sessions will be provided in advanced.

The DBpedia Knowledge Graph Tech Tutorial 2.0 will be held on May 2, 2022 at 3:00-6:00pm CEST.

We are proud to announce that we will organize an online tutorial at the Web conference on April 25, 2022 at 10.45 am CEST. A particular focus will be put on the DBpedia Infrastructure, i.e. the DBpedia’s Databus publishing platform and the associated DBpedia services (DBpedia Spotlight, Dbpedia Lookup and the DBpedia endpoints). The tutorial will also contain a session dedicated on the DBpedia’s current motto, i.e. Global and Unified Access to Linked Data. In practical examples we will illustrate the potential and the benefit of using DBpedia in the context of the Web of Data.

Topic and relevance
The main topic of this tutorial is the DBpedia community project which is centered around the DBpedia Knowledge Graph, the DBpedia Infrastructure and the DBpedia Services. DBpedia is one of the oldest, most prominent and successful knowledge engineering projects which aims at publishing high-quality linked open data on the Web. The DBpedia Knowledge Graph has been under development for over 14 years and is being improved to this day. Working and consuming such a large scale dataset has often proven to be a messy and difficult process. This DBpedia tutorial will be focused on three core DBpedia topics:

1) the DBpedia Knowledge Graph and the DBpedia community,

2) the DBpedia Infrastructure and the DBpedia services,

3) the current motto of DBpedia: “Global and Unified Access to Linked Data”.
